The message was driven home at this year’s IT’s that IT recruitment is not just for the boys!
IT recruiters Asia – This was the encouraging message that emerged from the fifth IT’s not just for the boys! which took place in the London offices of Bloomberg last week. Over 60 female technology undergraduates from many different universities took part in a series of case studies, exercises and networking with high-achieving role models in IT.
Kathryn Parsons, co-founder of De-Coded, gave the keynote address and told the audience to do what they loved, dream big, work hard but play nice and to immerse themselves in the culture of the company to be successful. She thought that women especially needed to develop entrepreneurial skills and these were as important in large corporations as they were in small business start-ups.
IT recruiters Asia – Alexandra Watson, leading happiness coach and published author, spoke about confidence being an act that maybe men were better at carrying off. Her advice was that even if you don’t feel confident, as long as you act confident then no one will know. She encouraged the female audience to shine rather than hide at work, always think positively and then they will ultimately achieve all their goals.
IT’s not just for the boys!, part of TARGETjobs Events’ national STEMinism awareness campaign, is aimed at promoting careers in IT to career-motivated female undergraduates. It takes place three times a year and seeks to address and challenge the stereotypical image of the industry as a place for geeky men. 11 employers sponsored the October event – ATOS, BP, Bloomberg, Cisco, EMC, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, PA Consulting, PwC, Sky and Vodafone – proof that top employers are very keen indeed to attract more women into IT jobs.
Lucy Bennett, Graduate Attraction Manager with Vodafone, said: “Vodafone are proud of our partnership with STEMinism UK from TARGETjobs Events. In supporting these events and showcasing inspirational women in technology and what they have achieved, we want to ensure that more STEM women and those thinking of a STEM career are informed about their options. As a result of this we hope to see more women joining companies like ours, building a pipeline for the future and encouraging more women to consider STEM roles who may not have otherwise”.
The next IT’s not just for the boys! takes place on 22 November, 2013 at Bloomberg in London.
